Canterbury Hockey Junior Competition

Junior Hockey is the starting point for many young players in Canterbury, providing opportunities for tamariki to learn the game, build confidence, develop new skills, and enjoy playing hockey with their friends throughout the winter season.

The purpose of junior hockey is to expose young people to a high quality hockey experience that helps them foster a lifelong connection to the sport. At this stage of a player’s hockey journey, the focus is on creating an environment that is fun, enjoyable, development focused, and appropriate for the age and stage of each participant.

The Canterbury Hockey Junior Competition runs from early May through to late August and caters for players in Year 3 to Year 8. Players take part in age appropriate, small sided formats aligned with the Hockey New Zealand Small Sticks approach, with game formats and field sizes adapted to suit each stage of development.

Clubs also deliver Fun Sticks programmes for Year 1 and 2 players, providing a fun and welcoming introduction to hockey before players move into the junior competition structure.

Mike Greer Homes is a proud sponsor of Canterbury Hockey junior competitions.

Purpose and Principles

Canterbury Hockey wants every junior player to have a positive, enjoyable, and appropriate hockey experience. Our junior hockey purpose and principles help guide the way competitions, programmes, coaching, support, and sideline behaviour are delivered across the community.

Our core principles are:

Fun and enjoyable

We want hockey to be a fun and enjoyable experience for all junior players.

Developing hockey fundamentals

We want players to develop a strong base of core hockey skills and an understanding of basic tactical principles.

Creating connections

We want hockey to help build meaningful relationships, friendships, and a long term connection to the Canterbury hockey community.

Holistic development

We want to support young people to develop their physical, emotional, and psychological wellbeing through positive sporting experiences.
