Fun Sticks

Fun Sticks is a fun and welcoming introduction to hockey for children in Year 1 and 2.

Fun Sticks is delivered by local hockey clubs from across Christchurch, which means programme details such as days, times, locations, cost, and registration processes may vary from club to club. Families interested in joining Fun Sticks should contact their local club directly for specific information about what is available in their area.

The programme gives young players the chance to try hockey in a safe, positive, and enjoyable environment. Sessions are designed to help tamariki build confidence, develop basic movement skills, learn simple stick and ball skills, and enjoy being active through games and play.

Fun Sticks is not about formal competition. The focus is on participation, enjoyment, and helping young players have a positive first experience with hockey.

What to expect from a Fun Sticks session

Fun Sticks sessions may look slightly different from club to club, but they generally include fun games, simple hockey activities, regular changes of activity, and lots of opportunities for children to be active.

Players will be introduced to basic movement skills such as running, dodging, balance, and coordination, alongside early hockey skills such as moving with the ball, striking, and passing.

Sessions are designed to be safe, engaging, and age appropriate, with a focus on making sure every participant is involved and having fun.
