Inclusive Hockey

Canterbury Hockey is committed to creating opportunities for more people to experience and enjoy hockey.

Our inclusive hockey work focuses on providing safe, welcoming, and adaptable hockey opportunities for people with disabilities and additional support needs. This includes our own Hockey Without Limits programme, as well as sessions delivered in partnership with schools, community groups, disability organisations, and local providers.

We recognise that every group and participant may need something slightly different. Our aim is to work alongside organisations and communities to create hockey experiences that are fun, accessible, and appropriate for the people taking part.

Hockey Without Limits

Hockey Without Limits is Canterbury Hockey’s inclusive hockey programme for children with disabilities and additional support needs.

The programme provides a fun and supportive introduction to hockey, with participants learning new skills, building confidence, and taking part in modified games and activities. Sessions are adapted to suit the group, with a focus on enjoyment, movement, participation, and positive experiences.

Hockey Without Limits is usually delivered as a four-week block during Term 1 and Term 4, with sessions held once a week on Sundays. The programme is most commonly attended by primary aged children.

Community Sessions and Partnerships

Alongside Hockey Without Limits, Canterbury Hockey also supports a range of disability and inclusion opportunities across the community.

We have worked alongside organisations and community groups including Primary Sport Canterbury, Parafed Canterbury, the South Island Halberg Games, Hōhepa Community College, and Recreate NZ to provide adapted hockey sessions for children, young people, and adults with disabilities and additional support needs.

These sessions may look different depending on the group, venue, age range, and support needs of the participants. Canterbury Hockey can adapt activities, equipment, session structure, and delivery style to help create a positive and enjoyable hockey experience.

If your school, organisation, or community group is interested in exploring an inclusive hockey session or partnership, please contact joe@canterburyhockey.org.nz.
