Small Sticks Junior Hockey Update
May 02, 2024
Canterbury Hockey have reviewed and updated our Junior Hockey Small Sticks information and rules to speed up the game and create progressions that are relevant and appropriate to players age and stage.
Please click the link below to see the full Small Sticks booklet, which contains guidance and information as well as grade specific rules and requirements.
For a brief overview of the rule changes, please see the below graphic.
Within the Kiwi Sticks grade, from 2024 onwards, we will be replacing Penalty Corners with the Power Play.
Please see the video below with voiceover of how the Power Play will look.
How the Power Play will work:
- When a foul is committed inside the attacking circle, a powerplay is awarded.
- The powerplay will be taken from the long corner mark.
- The defensive team must set up with three players in the defensive circle (including goalkeeper), while the other four defenders start in the opposite circle.
- The attacking can be positioned anywhere, as long as the ball starts from the long corner mark.
- Once everyone is set up, the umpire will blow the whistle to initiate play and the powerplay begins.
- The ball must move 5m or be touched by another player before entering the circle. At this point, normal play resumes.
