Canterbury Performance Centre (CPC)

 

The Canterbury Performance Centre (CPC) replaces the Senior Development Network Programme, with the aim of the new CPC structure and purpose to be more aligned to the HNZ/Blacksticks programme through the guidance of Aaron Ford, Hockey NZ Performance Coach.

 

The CPC provides high-quality development opportunities for Canterbury’s current CPL, Division 1 and SSP players. To be eligible for Block One of the programme you must be year 11 or above.

 

The Centre aligns with Canterbury representative and Hockey NZ pathways. Aaron Ford will be the lead coach, assisted by Canterbury Hockey’s Talent Development Manager, Chris Leslie, and other nominated coaches.

 

Aim

The primary aim of the CPC is to develop well prepared players that are:

  • Technically skilled
  • Tactically smart
  • Mentally prepared
  • Physically capable
  • Have life balance

 

Programme Timing and Delivery

There are two training blocks.

Block One (5 weeks): November to December

Block Two (6 weeks): January to February

 

Training Environment

For training purposes players will be divided into a senior group (CPL) and a development group (Division 1 and SSP). CHA has discretion to move players if required.

 

Cost

There is a financial contribution required to join the Centre.

Hockey Accelerators Programme

 

The purpose of this programme is to provide all participants with an opportunity to improve their skills. The programme caters to participants of all abilities, beginner or experienced, from Year 5 to Year 13.

 

The skills covered will include the likes of ball carrying & elimination, passing & receiving, defending concepts, and goal scoring.

 

Specialist goalkeeper specific training will also be provided.

 

Participants will be exposed to a range of fun hockey activities delivered by various quality coaches.

 

Under 13 Extension - Development Camps

 

Development Camps will take place during the July school holidays over a three-day period. The camps will include a mixture of skill development and game play. Participants will be exposed to high-quality coaching to develop targeted technical and tactical principles that will benefit their long-term development. For the game play element, players will be assigned to teams to partake in a hockey 5’s festival.

 

Phase 1 Detail

  • 3-day development camp that will consist of a mixture of training and small sided match play.
  • Targeted development focus – Technical skills, tactical concepts, character traits.
  • Day 1 & 2 split into morning and afternoon groups (by gender). On these days all groups will have a mixture of skill training sessions and hockey 5’s games. Day 3 will be all match play, hockey 5’s games.
  • Specialist goal keeper training will be included.

Who

  • Open registration for Year 7&8 athletes who want to participate in a development programme that aims to extend them beyond their club and school playing experiences. Athletes must meet the below criteria:
  • Must be Year 7 & 8 at school.
  • Must play for a club or school team entered in Canterbury Hockey’s winter competitions.
  • Must have a minimum of at least 1 year playing experience for a club/school team.

Coaches - Open registration for coaches coaching in this or a similar age group.

Umpires - Open registration for coaches coaching in this or a similar age group.

 

Programme Purpose

Provide an inclusive development opportunity that extends year 7&8 (under 13) athletes, and coaches and umpires associated with this age group.

 

Programme Objectives

  • Incorporate all interested athletes, coaches, and umpires, into a high-quality development focused programme that is distinctly different from club and school hockey experiences.
  • Provide an enjoyable experience that encourages participants and supporters to connect with others in the wider hockey community.
  • Develop targeted technical and tactical principles and concepts that will benefit participants long term development.
  • Ensure athlete welfare and workload is managed effectively.

Under 13 Extension - Regional Festival Event

 

The Regional Festival will be delivered during August and September, incorporating weekly training sessions focusing on skill and tactical development, and will conclude with a Regional Festival event which will include games against teams from Mid Canterbury and South Canterbury. Participants will be exposed to high level coaching throughout the programme, and we are hopeful that the Regional Festival will be a fun and memorable event for all.

 

Module Two will see participants predominantly split between Year 7 and Year 8, with players placed in teams made up of other players within their year group of similar ability.

 

The age group festivals will be two separate events with the Year 7 festival a 7-a-side event and the Year 8 an 11-a-side event.

Programme Objectives

Incorporate all interested athletes, coaches, and umpires, into a high-quality development focused programme that is distinctly different from club and school hockey experiences

Provide an enjoyable experience that encourages participants and supporters to connect with others in the wider hockey community.

Develop targeted technical and tactical principles and concepts that will benefit participants long term development.

Ensure athlete welfare and workload is managed effectively.

 

Who

Open registration for Year 7&8 athletes who want to participate in a development programme that aims to extend them beyond their club and school playing experiences. Athletes must meet the below criteria:

  • Must be Year 7 & 8 at school.
  • Must play for a club or school team entered in Canterbury Hockey’s winter competitions.
  • Must have a minimum of at least 1 year playing experience for a club/school team.
  • PLEASE NOTE - No requirement to have completed Module One (Development Camp) to be able to participate in the U13 Regional Festival.

Programme Details

 

Year 7 Festival

  • 2-day Regional Festival event (7-a-side).
  • One day to be played in Ashburton, and one day to be played in Christchurch at Nunweek Park.
  • It is expected athletes will be placed in teams with players of similar ability.
  • Mid Canterbury & South Canterbury teams attending games in Ashburton ONLY.
  • Teams will have one training per week leading up to the festival.

Year 8 Festival

  • 3-day Regional Festival event (11-a-side).
  • Full event to be played in Christchurch at Nunweek Park.
  • It is expected athletes will be placed in teams with players of similar ability.
  • Mid Canterbury & South Canterbury teams attending on Saturday & Sunday.
  • Teams will have one training per week leading up to the festival.

Please note, there will not be trials for these programmes/teams, however athletes will be grouped together with others of a similar ability with consideration being given to athletes playing experience and age.

 

Trainings will be either a Monday or a Wednesday evening (dependent on coach availability and team placed in). All training sessions will be at Nunweek Park, between 4pm-8pm on one of these days.

 

All athletes will also require a Canterbury red paladin training t-shirt. This will be used as the playing top for the festival. They can be purchased from Just Hockey.

Athletes - open registration for under 15 athletes who want to participate in an extension-focused development programme and meet the below criteria:

  • Must be Year 9, 10 & 11 at school and over the age of 13 and under the age of 15 as of 1 January 2024.
  • Must play for a club or school team entered in Canterbury Hockey’s winter competitions.
  • Must have a minimum of at least 1 year playing experience for a club/school team.

Coaches – open registration for coaches coaching in this or a similar age group.

Umpires – open registration for umpires umpiring in this or a similar age group.

Provide an inclusive development opportunity that extends 13–15-year-old (under 15) athletes, and coaches and umpires of this age group, beyond the experiences they receive in club/school hockey.

 

Programme Objectives

  • Incorporate all interested athletes, coaches, and umpires, into a high-quality development focused programme that is distinctly different from club, school and U13 programme hockey experiences.
  • Provide an enjoyable experience that encourages participants and supporters to connect with others in the wider hockey community.
  • Develop targeted technical and tactical principles and concepts that will benefit participants long term development.
  • Ensure athlete welfare and workload is managed effectively.

Under 15 Extension - Southern Regional Tournament

  • 5-day South Island event (11-a-side).
  • Full event to be played in Christchurch at Nunweek Park.
  • It is expected athletes will be placed in teams with players of similar ability and age.
  • Teams to be made up of players who are similar age where possible (i.e., Year 9’s grouped together, and Year 10/11’s to be grouped together).
  • Teams attending from across the South Island (8 other associations).

Pre-event Training

  • Teams will have one training per week leading up to the festival.
  • Trainings will be either a Monday or a Wednesday evening (dependent on coach availability and team placed in). All training sessions will be at Nunweek Park, between 4pm-8pm on one of these days.

Please note, there will not be trials for these programmes/teams. Athletes will be grouped together with others of a similar ability with consideration being given to athletes playing experience and age.

 

All athletes will also require a Canterbury red paladin training t-shirt. This will be used as the playing top for the tournament. They can be purchased from Just Hockey.
