SHIELD MERRY GO ROUND
SHIELD MERRY GO ROUND
June 28, 2020
St. Andrew’s College claimed the girls Connetics Shield for the first time ever on Friday evening, while their boys team were made to pay for a lacklustre display and couldn’t defend what they had won only seven days prior.
Holders St. Margaret’s College headed into the match with a relatively new squad, only four members remaining from the side who took the shield off Rangi Ruru in the final match of last season. They left the turf without the silverware they arrived with, conceding a penalty stroke that was converted by St. Andrew’s captain Aleisha Davis in the only goal of the game.
St. Andrew’s were made to defend a lot, but kept composed and counter attacked when given the opportunity. The decisive moment came in the second quarter from a penalty corner, with Davis making no mistake from the stroke spot. St. Margaret’s kept up the pressure in the second half, but goalkeeper Hannah Hughes in goal had a fantastic debut and was fundamental to St. Andrew’s victory.
