Who are our umpires?
Canterbury Hockey Association is very proud of our pool of umpires, which is a fantastic mixture of experienced senior umpires and enthusiastic umpires who are relatively new to the game. We have several international umpires and many umpires who have been involved with major national tournaments. Our newer umpires are often players who would like to be involved in the game from a different angle, or parents who have recognised the need for confident umpires in their children's games.
There are plenty of ways to be involved in the game and umpiring is a vital part of our sport. Canterbury Hockey is always looking to grow it’s pool of umpires at all levels. So if you are an experienced umpire new to the area, or just keen to take up umpiring, Canterbury Hockey and the Umpire Committee can help get you into the game.
It’s never too early to get started and the Canterbury Hockey Umpire Committee supports clubs involved in the competitions with training their young umpires. Current senior umpires present the courses and starting umpires receive hands on feedback via the Junior Mentoring Program throughout the season.
Club Umpire Education
Club Appointment Umpires are an integral part of the Canterbury Hockey competitions and the Umpire Committee supports courses that can be presented at clubs to develop and up-skill their club appointment umpires. If you would like further information please contact email@example.com.
Canterbury Hockey uses appointed umpires at the CPL (premier grade) and Division 1 and 2 men’s and women’s open grades. Appointed umpires at these levels are required to have been to a HockeyNZ Level One Umpiring Course or have equivalent experience.
Umpiring opportunities are also available in the summer months through the Canterbury Hockey Masters and Super 6 competitions.
