Our Teams - NHL
Our Canterbury NHL teams, the Cats (Women) and Cavaliers (Men), contest the HockeyNZ National Hockey League annually, and are regional teams that represent the Canterbury region as defined by Hockey New Zealand. The 2019 Ford NHL took place in Tauranga in the middle of September.
The Cats started their campaign on the back foot with a first up 2-3 loss to arch rivals Auckland in Pool A, but recovered to post victories against eventual winners North Harbour and Southern to see them finish top of the pool and progress to Pool C. A 2-1 win over Central was followed by a 2-4 loss to Northland which meant that the Cats needed to beat North Harbour by a number of goals to grab a spot in the final. Unfortunately a 2-1 win was not enough for the girls in red and black to progress and they had to settle for a battle against Central for the bronze medal. A 2-1 victory saw the Cats finish in 3rd.
The Cavaliers had a great start to their NHL campaign, with three wins in Pool B, against Midlands, Southern and North Harbour, to put them comfortably through to Pool C. A 2-4 loss to Auckland in their first Pool C match meant that, as with the girls, the Cavaliers needed to make sure their goal difference in their remaining Pool C matches could put them through to the final. But a 3-2 victory over Capital followed by a 1-2 loss to North Harbour meant the Cavaliers missed qualifying for a spot in the final and had to settle for a rematch against Capital to decide the bronze medal. A 4-2 victory secured 3rd spot for the Cavs.
