The Canterbury Cavaliers (Men) and Canterbury Cats (Women) contest the Hockey New Zealand National Hockey League annually, and are regional teams that represent the Canterbury region as defined by Hockey New Zealand.
This means that the teams are selected from the best eligible players in the five provincial associations within the greater Canterbury region - Canterbury, Malvern, Mid Canterbury, South Canterbury and the West Coast.
The 2018 Ford NHL had a slightly different format than previous years, with round 1 of the competition being played the weekend before the tournament. The Cavaliers traveled to Dunedin to play Southern and came home with a comfortable 5-1 win, while the Cats thumped Southern 9-1 at Marist Park. Both sides then traveled to Wellington for the rest of the NHL from 15 - 23 September. The Cats won two games and drew five games in their round robin competition which unfortunately meant that they finished outside the top 4 and played Captial for the 5th spot. A hard fought 3-2 win saw them come home in 5th position. The Cavs finished their round robin as top qualifiers but then fell at the next hurdle with a 2-3 loss to North Harbour in their semi-final. A convincing 6-1 win in their next match ensured that the Cavs came home with a bronze medal.
