The Canterbury Cavaliers (Men) and Canterbury Cats (Women) contest the Hockey New Zealand National Hockey League annually, and are regional teams that represent the Canterbury region as defined by Hockey New Zealand.
This means that the teams are selected from the best eligible players in the five provincial associations within the greater Canterbury region - Canterbury, Malvern, Mid Canterbury, South Canterbury and the West Coast.
The 2017 NHL saw both our sides travel to Wellington from 16 - 24 September. Both teams were ravaged by injuries to key players both before the start of NHL and during the tournament. However, the Cats & Cavs both played pretty well in their pool games, with the Cats finishing 2nd and the Cavs finishing 3rd. For the first time in the NHL format the competition then split into quarter finals, seeing the Cats come up against North Harbour and the Cavs meeting Capital. Unfortunately both teams narrowly lost these game and therefore ended up in the bottom half of the table. The Cats went on to beat Southern 7-1 before losing to Central 3-1 in their last game, and finished 6th overall. The Cavs went down to Midlands in their next match and finished with a win on the last day, 11-0 against Northland, and thus avoided the wooden spoon.
