Last Friday our hockey facilities at Nga Puna Wai were blessed by Kaharoa Manihera from Ngai Tahu, meaning we can now access our turfs. The Blessing was a low key affair attended by some of the members of our Canterbury Hockey and CAST boards, Jeannette Harper, Mark Beatson, Murray Chesterman, Selwyn Maister and Peter Cox, along with Rod Templeton and Chris Leslie. Representatives from the Council, the other sports and the construction team were also there. Kahoroa explained the Maori history of the area and blessed the site before all the parties spoke briefly about the thrill of being part of this absolutely stunning sports hub. Selwyn, Jeannette and Mark then planted a Kowhai to signify hockey joining the wider sports hub whanau at Nga Puna Wai.
We are now planning to have a Open Day in December to welcome all our hockey community onto the turfs and enjoy the new home of Canterbury Hockey.
