Plenty of goals and some surprising results occurred in Round One of Canterbury Hockey’s Premier League.
The men’s Challenge Shield changed hands at its first opportunity, with Southern United producing the goods against 2018 finalists Marist. A tight match with limited opportunities, Chez Parore got the only goal of the game with less than two minutes remaining to give the Southern boys the victory and some silverware to start the season.
The match of the day was undoubtedly the Avon Men taking on Carlton Redcliffs. Avon were strong out of the blocks, creating several early opportunities that went to waste before Rob Buhler stepped up and showed his set piece prowess with a well placed drag flick. Redcliffs slowly started to work themselves back into game, but were unable to find an equaliser before halftime.
